1. What does Patroclus propose to Achilles and what is Achilles’ response? Why does Achilles grant Patroclus’ request?
Patroclus requests that he wear Achilles' armor in order to scare away the Trojans. Achilles grants him this wish, thinking it shall be a good way to indirectly fight for the Greeks, while still keeping his oath that he will not go out and fight.
2. On p. 413 line 35 (approximately), Patroclus tells Achilles that Achilles is “cursed in [his] own courage.” What does Patroclus mean by that and do you agree with him?
Patroclus means that Achilles is a fool keeping his oath of peace for so long, because the Greeks are dying without him.
3. Either ask questions about the text or write down vocab words from the text with definitions.
Why was Achilles so near to the battlefield when this happened?

NEW ADDITION TO THE CDT NETWORK!
Hey all, I am pleased to announce a new addition to the services of Clan Darkterror Productions: The Eternity's End Devlog! View it HERE!
Illiad assignment, 2/28
1. Write a question you have about the text, either an interpretive question that you have an opinion on, or something that you don't understand. You don't need to write the answer.
Did Achilles ever get Briseis back?
2. What was your opinion of Achilles before reading Book 9? Does it change after reading Book 9? Explain why or why not.
No, my opinion of him did not change. He still seems to be a warrior with morals to me.
3. Same as yesterday - Make a list of the persuasive strategy used by these characters, following this format:
Who is speaking?
What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
What persuasive strategy is it?
Why is it an example of that strategy?
Do this at least three times with different examples.
Remember the persuasive strategies include:
1. Appeal to reason (logic - does it “make sense” to do what the speaker says)
2. Appeal to emotion (does it try to make you happy, sad, angry etc… in an attempt to get you to act or think a certain way)
3. Appeal to ethics (right and wrong, moral principals - does it get you to think that a particular thought is morally right or wrong to get you to act or think a certain way)
Lines 606-619
Who is speaking?
Achilles
What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is telling the people Agamemnon sent that he will not go out to fight, no matter how much they give him
What persuasive strategy is it?
Reason
Why is it an example of that strategy?
He is trying to inject common sense into Agamemnon's men, telling them that he will not submit.

Illiad assignment, 2/27
Before I begin, let me quickly state that I seem to have lost my packet, so I was using an online version, found here.
1. Write a question. It can be an interpretive question that you have an opinion on or something about the text that you don't understand. You do not need to write the answer.
What is Agamemnon trying to say in lines 115-161?
2. What was your opinion of Agamemnon before reading this section? Does your opinion of him change after reading it? Why or why not? Aone paragraph reply is fine, minimum of 6 solid setneces, but you are encouraged to write more.
At first, I thought Agamemnon was a rather hotheaded and arrogant character. In book one, even though he realized it would have been in the interest of him and his people to surrender Chriseis, he was too proud of himself and proclaimed that he would not do it until he got Briseis in return. It made me wonder how it was possible for him to be "The first among equals," for surely nobody would willingly chose a king as arrogant and self-centered as he was.
Then, after reading book 9, my opinion about him changed completely. Why? Allow me to quote Agamemnon himself: "These will I give him, and amid them shall be she that then I took away, the daughter of Briseus." He finally realizes he was wrong to take Briseis, and what's more, decides to return her. It takes a well-developed conscience to see that one of your own actions were wrong, and it takes a lot of guts to admit such a thing.
3. At various points in the text some characters attempt to persuade other characters to take a course of action. Examples of characters using persuasion include Nestor, Odysseus, and Ajax. Make a list of the persuasive strategy used by these characters, following this format:
Who is speaking?
What does that person say and to whom does he say it?

3. Appeal to ethics (right and wrong, moral principals - does it get you to think that a particular thought is morally right or wrong to get you to act or think a certain way)
Lines 17-28:
Who is speaking?
Agamemnon
What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He tells the Greeks that they must retreat, for however much they would like to keep their honor, they cannot win.
What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to emotion
Why is it an example of that strategy?
He is attempting to make them feel sad for him, since he wanted glory too.
Lines 163-172
Who is speaking?
Nestor
What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is telling Agamemnon that it would be a good idea to send men to Achilles' house to apologize for taking Briseis.
What persuasive strategy is it?
Appeal to ethics
Why is it an example of that strategy?
He is telling Agamemnon what would be the right thing to do.
Lines 225-253
Who is speaking?
Odysseus
What does that person say and to whom does he say it?
He is telling Achilles to rejoin them, for they are on the verge of retreating
What persuasive strategy is it?
Ethics and Emotion
Why is it an example of that strategy?
He is attempting to make him feel pity for them, so that he may rejoin them

Illiad reflection- Book one
If you were an ancient Greek, which of the following statements would you agree with?
A) Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself.
Or
B) Agamemnon is the commander, as such he is in the right, and I support his decision to ask for Achilles’ war prize Briseis – even if it means that Achilles will sit out the war.
Rage... Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles. For in this tale of Greek warriors and Greek hatred and Greek woe, his rage may be the only rage that is considered justified. For it is Achilles son of Peleus who is the only one in this story that puts his morals before his pride. Many think men are judged by their Arete, but it is those like Agamemnon who's arete leads to hubris. But Achilles, Achilles is far brighter. Achilles would willingly give up Briseis to Agamemnon's soldiers, for he does not wish to pick a fight with them. It is Agamemnon himself and only Agamemnon himself that Achilles has a quarrel with.
END OF LINE. Now, I know that you all expect a long, drawn out paragraph about me recruiting for my game as a footer to every blog, but instead, I shall leave you with This Link.

Disagreements and Fights
"The other side of the coin, part 3"
Tch. So many women in his life, and he's only 15. He retired to his bed, and laughed himself to sleep. As he did, he uttered a few lyrics from a song he knew long ago, right before his eyes closed.
"I've loved, I've laughed and cried,
I've had my fill, my share of losing,
And now, as tears subside, I find it all
So amusing.
To think I did all that,
And, may I say, not in a shy way,
Oh no, oh no not me. I did it My way..."
He drifted off into a peaceful, dreamless slumber.
When he awoke, he realized he had the strangest of dreams. He had dreamed that he was chatting with one of the girls from the video game he's making... over Gmail! What a crazy thing that was. Being the philosophical and thoughtful person he kept telling himself he was, he recalled the night before to try to find a reason to this madness.
"Hmmm... let's see... The hill... talking to myself... nature photos... 8th grade retreat... that girl..."
"That girl..."
His mind began to wander off track, as it always does when he is thinking to himself. That girl. That fight. Two years of madness. He quietly laughed to himself. "Tch. There seems to be nothing about my childhood I can look back on without embarrassment, is there? Ha!"
He recalled the details of that fight. He was... He was a fool back then. For whatever becrazed reason, his entire life revolved around bringing that girl down a few notches. What he only realized years later, though, was how each and every one of his attacks grazed off of her and hit someone else.
That counterfeit letter. The yelling matches. All of it.
He even recalled that even nowadays, whenever the subject came up between him and a certain Halo-obsessed friend of his, the Halo-obsessed one would always say that "That fight split the entire class up into two factions." But the one who started the fight... He never realized. He was blinded to the world around him. He was always insane, but during those two years, it was in a very different, more mentally unhealthy way.
He even remembered that during that year, when the fight was supposedly done and over with, he wrote a play about it as part of a school project. It wasn't like the blog entries about it he did in recent days, where he simply reminisced about it. In fact, it was half retelling the story, half shoving his victory into her face. It even made it as one of the few plays done by the professional actors. In retrospect, all he was doing was displaying their folly for all to see. That, and re-kindling a dying flame.
Even to this day, three years after their supposed peace treaty, there was still a bit of name calling and unkind words, although it was thankfully on a much more friendly and playful level.
"Sigh. Why is it that there is nothing in my childhood that I can look back on without regret?"
He wondered what he will end up regretting from this year. Probably interaction with that tall, loud, annoying kid in his class. He regretted that already.
But before he got into that, he first had to eat breakfast. He was starving, which was quite a rare occurrence.

Clan Darkterror Productions is still recruiting!
Hey everyone, Justin here! Just a quick report on the current situation of CDP:
As you have all probably realized by now, we've been recruiting brave souls for voice actors and a few other oddjobs (So far, I've only gotten one reply. Come on everyone, don't be shy!) Well, I assume that since I had you all send it to my personal email, (setokaiba800@gmail.com) that threw people off, since it implies it's some Yu-Gi-Oh thing, even though it's not. So, I took the liberty of fetching a new email just for this task!
If you are now interested in voice acting for our game, hit us with an email at our new adress, eternitysendrecruiting@gmail.com! (And while you're at it, come visit our official site at eternitiesendthegame.googlepages.com, and our forums at z11.invisionfree.com/Eternitys_End_Forums/index.php!) Currently open positions are:
Dungeon design (Required that you send me an example of a dungeon before being approved for this position. It does not have to be a functioning app, a few concept drawings of the surroundings and the puzzles will suffice)
Voice actors (It's either we have none of these at all, or quite a few, so for this to come to fruition, we shall need all the help we can get! Alas, though, I do not have sufficient equipment for this, so you will either have to procure your own or convince Mr. V to let him loan you his. And yes, and if this is to come to fruition, there are a pair of ladies that complete the trio of main characters, so all y'all girls down there don't be afraid to come ask!)
Item design/stat balancing (Those of you that love weapons and explosions, come on down!)
Monster design/stat balancing (Like drawing things with fangs and razor sharp claws? This is a good job for you!)
Spell design/stat balancing (More explosions than an entire season of Mythbusters!)
And anything else you can think of!
So, go check it out!

The Illiad, 2/13
Per Mr Jana's... I'm not sure whether I should say "Request" or "Demand," but... Here is a quick question I have about the Illiad:
What makes Apollo want to cast a plague against so many innocent people just because one man insulted his priest?
END OF LINE. Now, as always, I must re-emphasise the current employment status of Clan Darkterror Productions, as I shall endlessly do until either Google's servers explode, until these spots are filled, or until the game is done (I need to set it up so it does this automatically):
My spriting dilemma has been solved!(Some weeks ago, at this point ;)) Michael Murrillo has risen to my call for help, and it was halfway on his own will! But, let us not stop there! Although two people is to some extent a sufficient team for this job, all the help we can get is appreciated! It does not necessarily have to be in spriting, either! Other jobs of interest that I would like to point out are:
Dungeon design (Required that you send me an example of a dungeon before being approved for this position. It does not have to be a functioning app, a few concept drawings of the surroundings and the puzzles will suffice)

**My Rage - Cause
"The Other Side of the Coin, part 2"
...Before he knew it, the day grew old, and the night young. He got up, turned around, and began to walk towards his house so that he may retire to his couch.
As he walked, he began to recap the previous 5 minutes of his life. Nature photography, that girl, 8th grade retreat...
Tch. That fight with that girl. What a strange two years that was. Alas, how entirely immature he was back then. How did THAT one begin?
Ah, yes. It began with the stupidest of things. A simple argument over a pair of video game characters. He was fresh from elementary school, and going to a school in a city that was entirely unfamiliar to him. He supposed that, to some extent, it was natural to be an idiot in that part of his life.
Too bad that idiocy would cause a rather pitiful series of events.
It started as a rather friendly debate in Art class. At the time, he was a hardcore Shadow fanboy, her a hardcore Sonic fangirl. For some reason or another, it got rather serious some few months later. Stuff was thrown. Threats made. Hateful words uttered.
Surely, such despise was not just the cause of some silly video game debate? I mean, some few months after things got nasty, the entire Sonic/Shadow debate was entirely forgotten, and only hatred remained. For what reason?
Was it simply spontanious? Having played video games ever since he was 5, maybe he had a natural anger problem? No, that wasn't it at all. He had a lot of friends that year, but only one enemy.
Rivalry, that is what it was. That is what he called it ever since it began. She was his rival, the two destined to hate each other for all ages. But, for what reason did he consider her his rival? What made him want to hate her?
Ego was the first thing to come to mind. She was rather full of herself, as people say. But... that never got to him before, so why now? Hmmm...
How did it happen? Maybe it was that she would never shut up. Never silent. Never gave an old man like himself any time to stop and think. That was certainly always annoying. She was just like his little brothers, loud and endless, just like a chorus of chirping crickets. Except, he couldn't just come out and slap her, the way he did with his brothers. In retrospect, that was sort of bad, too.
But, that couldn't have been it, could it? There had to be something more? "Haha! Maybe I was jealous, however cliche it may be," he thought. He was jesting, of course, but then he began to think of it. She... she had a lot of friends, parents that actually accepted the idea of getting a grade other than an A, and a relatively happy life. He, he was a stranger in a strange land, strict parents, and struggled just to do something as simple as smile.
In any case, he was simply glad that a peace treaty was formed between the two. He was too old to hate, now. All he wanted to do was rest, relax, and enjoy the night sky, as he has told himself a thousand times over.
He continued to walk towards his house. As he did, he passed an old childhood friend's house, one he hasn't seen in years, despite the fact she was only two doors down.
He walked through his own garage door, and thought about that other girl. The one he used to know back in Elementary.
Tch. So many women in his life, and he's only 15. He retired to his bed, and laughed himself to sleep. As he did, he uttered a few lyrics from a song he knew long ago, right before his eyes closed.

...Before he knew it, the day grew old, and the night young.
END OF LINE. Now, as always, I must re-emphasise the current employment status of Clan Darkterror Productions, as I shall endlessly do until either Google's servers explode, until these spots are filled, or until the game is done:
My spriting dilemma has been solved!(Some weeks ago, at this point ;)) Michael Murrillo has risen to my call for help, and it was halfway on his own will! But, let us not stop there! Although two people is to some extent a sufficient team for this job, all the help we can get is appreciated! It does not necessarily have to be in spriting, either! Other jobs of interest that I would like to point out are:
Dungeon design (Required that you send me an example of a dungeon before being approved for this position. It does not have to be a functioning app, a few concept drawings of the surroundings and the puzzles will suffice)
Voice actors (It's either we have none of these at all, or quite a few, so for this to come to fruition, we shall need all the help we can get! 2/8 descriptive writing assignment
Click. Tink.
Jim turned off the TV. "That Montag guy is dead for sure," he thought. "I gotta go see this firsthand." As he walked out the door, he turned around and shouted up the stairs to his wife, wanting to tell her he was going out. After the third try with no answer, he assumed she was simply listening to her seashells. He shrugged, and left without another word.
As he walked down the street, he could hear the fighter planes howling above. He began to wonder: What would happen if a plane was shot down, and the wreckage started to hurtle after him? He shivered. He rarely ventured outside, so he never thought of it before. But now...
He quickly hid behind a building. Brappapapapapapapapapapapp! The bullets soared thousands of feet overhead, but no explosion. He quickly darted to the next building while it was silent, while the planes were nowhere near.
Braapapapapapapappapapapappp! Tsew! Tsew! Two planes chased each other, one flying unusually low, the other diving down on the first. The bullets from the second plane missed, and shot fountains of water from the puddle he was standing in only half a second ago.
When he looked again, the puddle had been replaced with a scorchmark. Had he not ran as fast as he did, the scorchmark would have been acompanied by a puddle of blood. And some spleen.
The sound died down. He quickly ran across the street, and peered out. He heard the whirl of helicopters overhead, and the CLANK! CLANK! CLANK! of the hound's cold, steel paws against the concrete.
Something was wrong, though. It was running the wrong way. It was running towards him.
He began to run as fast as his legs would allow, pumping his arms like an oil rig. He turned the corner, and saw his escape: A fire escape right above a trashcan. He leapt, and banged his knee on the can. The can rolled away. There goes his plan of escape.
He continued to run, and lo and behold! He came face to face with a brick wall, just like in the movies. No way to jump over, and he could already hear the hound closing on him.
He turned around, and saw the glow of it's eyes. He was like a fly in a spider's web.In a last-ditch effort, he tried something. He put his jacket over his head, waved his hand, and said "I'm not the man you are looking for." Apparently, the hound never watched Star Wars before. The hound leapt, and his scream pierced the night.
Then all went silent.
END OF LINE, as the MCP would say. Now that my assignment is done, I will re-emphasize something for the third entry in a row:

Blogging groups: Givin props to dem crazy hipsters.
As Mr. Jana requested, I must now give... ah... "props" to my homies. Or something of that sort. *Sigh* 'Tis a sad day when your teacher is more hip than you are. I'm getting old before my time.
But I digress. The awards go to:
Michael Murillo: For use of the words "Towering" and "Fumbling". These words helped portray the feeling of fear right from the starting gate.
Cameron Parvini: And Parvini man wins the awards for using the words "Thrust", "Desolate", and "Overwhelming".
Thrust gave me the feeling of how sudden it came on, Desolate gave me the feeling of an extreme lonliness, and "Overwhelming" the sense of- dare I say it? Raw power. You had three completely seperate emotions going on within the course of a few sentences, and what's more, you actually got it to work. Bravo, says I!
Matthew McCauley: Matthew, Matthew, Matthew. Maaaaathew. When I first saw this tiny little paragraph some days ago and read the first few seconds, I was rather disappointed, thinking it was going to be some mediocre thing.
I should have known better.
Although it's already been mentioned to death, "Trepidation" was clearly the star in this circus of vocabulary. I did not even know such a word existed, but once I looked up the definition, I discovered it fit in perfectly.
Another excellent use of the English language would be your use of "acquired". Acquired is one of those wonderful words that has the exact same meaning as a more common word, but nevertheless makes you look smart. It has yet to fail it's job when you use it. I don't know if this was a conscience decision or not, but having a longer word there sort of helped with the flow of the paragraph. If you simply used the word "got" instead, the sentence would have seemed too short compared to the others, and the paragraph would have lost it's rhythm.
I guess all that rap you listen to is good for something after all ;)
And, just to make sure nobody missed it in my previous entry some minutes ago:

2-6 F. 451 Descriptive writing assignment
I think that the scene where Beatty is being burned was rather scary. Some good words he used were shrieking, sprawling, writhing, and terrible. All of them portray the idea of one theme: a murder. It's portrays a rather dismal scene, almost Twilight Zone-esque (Then again, the use of the word "mannequin" may simply be subliminally enforcing me to say that, since "The After Hours" is on my list of "episodes to watch before I die" list ;)) Another way he adds to the morbid occurrence is how he doesn't describe the fire, as we are all used to, but the pitiful twitching motions Beatty makes. It gives the creepy idea of a body that should be dead, but is not quite there yet.
On a completely unrelated and lighter note:
Random fact of the day: Thurl Ravenscroft, who played the "Ghost Host" on the Disneyland ride "Haunted Mansion," is also the voice of (in)famous Frosted Flakes mascot Tony the Tiger.
Also, my spriting dilemma has been solved! Michael Murrillo has risen to my call for help, and it was halfway on his own will! But, let us not stop there! 2-6 Hessoid writing assignment
Please excuse the sudden inversion in my Bolding scheme, Mr. Jana requires it.
1. What do you think this myth tells about the ancient Greeks? What values did they have? Why would a story like this develop?
I think that this myth shows that the Greeks would rather relate the creation of the world to human nature rather than, say, Norse mythology, where there's a cow that feeds a giant who dies and becomes the earth or some convoluted nonsense with no real meaning.
2. What universal needs or desires are represented in this story? What needs/desires might be particular to the Greeks? If you have a hard time determining whether it is particular or universal that is okay, write about why it is difficult to choose.
Some desires shown are the desire for power, represented by Cronos' struggle to eat all his children, the desire for immortality, represented by the Gods' and goddesses' immortality, and the need to understand why things exist, the thing that this story is trying to explain. Some needs shown are the need for a family, shown by Gaea and Rhea trying to protect their children, and a need for parental help, shown by how Rhea saves Zeus
3. Explain how Zeus came to power and discuss how similar. Write about these following issues: How is he similar/different to Uranus or Cronos? Is his grip on power secure or fragile? Explain why or why not.
Zeus's rise to power is different from Uranus' and Cronos' because Zeus was completely justified in doing it. He wasn't "killing" innocents like Cronos was. Also, from the little knowledge I have of Greek Mythology (80% of which is based on the Disney movie "Hercules," so don't quote me on this), Zeus is a kind God, meaning his children are not as likely to revolt as Uranus and Cronos' were.
